Novus™ Valve Systems

Regulates physiological flow within normal ranges of Intraventricular Pressure (IVP) in the supine, sitting or standing position.

  • The integral normally-open Physiological Flow Device works in combination with our valve to more closely maintain IVP within normal limits, while minimizing overdrainage.
  • Straight-flow through path simplifies de-bubbling prior to implantation.
  • Horizontally mounted silicone/polysulfone valve mechanism and rigid housing protects the diaphragm from accidental needle puncture during CSF sampling and flushing.
  • The rigid plastic valve housing and polypropylene needle guard reduces the risk of improper needle placement when accessing the reservoir
  • Proximal and distal occluders permit selective flushing and patency testing
  • Designed with no metal parts that can interfere with CT or MRI scans
  • Two pressure ranges provide the flexibility to meet specific needs.
  • Available in both standard and mini size

Normal intraventricular pressure varies with body position. Normal intraventricular pressure(IVP) ranges from approximately 5 to 15cm H2O in the supine position and -5 to 5 cm H2O in the upright position (referenced to the foramen of Monro). Fluid flow through a shunt system should compensate for normal CSF production, as well as cerebrovascular induced ICP changes, in order to maintain intraventricular pressure within the target physiological limits, regardless of patient position.

Most shunts are designed for optimum performance in the supine position only. Conventional differential-pressure valves are prone to gravity-induced overdrainage when a patient sits or stands. Normally-closed siphon-control devices are intended to prevent overdrainage, but require additional fluid pressure to open and may cause abnormally elevated IVP in the upright position.

Multi-stage "constant-flow" or flow-limiting valves may be unable to respond to ICP crises of cerebrovascular origin with sufficient flow to prevent wide fluctuations in pressure.

The pressure/flow performance of the Novus® system was specifically designed to resemble the characteristics of normal healthy CSF physiology. Novus features an integral Physiological Flow Device based on our patented* normally-open concept. This proven HEYER-SCHULTE® innovation adds variable resistance to flow as required to prevent overdrainage when a patient sits or stands. The Novus maintains physiological flow within normal ranges of IVP. Our approach is intended to restore more closely the important balance between intracranial and cerebrovascular pressures and optimize patient care and treatment.
